Leading up to the official announcement of Apple Music, a rumor cropped up that suggested the streaming service would boast celebrity artist DJs.
In that original report, Pharrell Williams, David Guetta and Drake were all listed as potential candidates for the gigs. However, when Apple unveiled Music, along with Beats 1, the company focused on his three main live DJs that are planted across the globe, including Zane Lowe. That doesn’t mean those celebrity artists won’t have a chance to run the show for a little while, though.
As revealed in a new report from The New York Times, Beats 1 will have programming blocks that are hosted by artists Pharrell Williams, Dr. Dre, Elton John and others. According to the report, Beats 1 will be broken down to one- and two-hour “blocks,” where artists will sometimes host and/or produce the content therein:“Everyone keeps going to their devices because of fear of missing out,” he said. “I’m constantly going on Instagram, Twitter, wondering what’s going on in my friends’ lives. What am I missing? I want that for radio. What’s on right now, right now, that I didn’t know I wanted to listen to?”
To keep Beats 1 sounding fresh around the world, the station will alternate one- and two-hour programming blocks by established broadcasters with those by musicians and celebrities, who will host and plan the shows themselves. Among the names on board: the teen actor Jaden Smith, the alternative singer St. Vincent, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and the British electronic duo Disclosure.“
Other shows will include blocks hosted by Dr. Dre, which will be called “The Pharmacy.” Another show will be a mash-up of modern classics and “eclectic oldies,” which will be hosted by Elton John and called “Elton John’s Rocket Hour.” Pharrell Williams is also tapped to be a guest host at some point down the road, as is Drake as well. Pharrell already has an upcoming single that will be exclusively launched on Apple Music, called Freedom. Meanwhile, Drake was on stage during the unveiling of Apple Music, so it’s no secret that Apple’s upcoming music streaming service already has close ties to several different artists.
The report also sheds some light on where the idea for Beats 1 came from. Unsurprisingly, Trent Reznor, a key designer of Apple Music, was a driving force in the creation of the always-on radio service. Reznor took some cues from DJ Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio show, and it would eventually lead to the creation of Apple Music as a whole, and ultimately the creation of Beats 1 as well.
Recently, it was revealed that Zane Lowe’s first interview for Beats 1 will be with prominent artist Eminem. Apple Music will launch on June 30 for $9.99 for an individual, and $14.99 for a family account. Are you looking forward to the launch of Apple Music?
