The developers of Plex, one of the most popular media streaming software out there, have confirmed that they will be bringing their app to the new Apple TV.
Plex co-founder Scott Olechowski confirmed in an email to ITWorld that they are very excited about bringing their app to the new Apple TV and are currently evaluating the best way of doing so.
I reached out to Plex via email and Scott Olechowski, the co-founder of Plex replied, saying, “We are very excited to have a crack at bringing our users Apple TV. It’s been a long requested platform and we’re excited to work on it. We want it, our users want it…and we’re anxiously awaiting the tvOS developer beta info, so we can finally dig in.”
He also thanked Apple for making the same APIs available on tvOS that are already available on iOS. Olechowski, however, did not provide any timeframe as to when the app will be launched and what all features it will pack.
Plex is already available on a wide range of platforms including iOS, and is widely considered as one of the best — if not the best — media streaming software out there. A native app for the Apple TV will make it possible to directly stream content from a network attached storage or PC to the Apple TV. Due to the limitations of the current generation Apple TV, it is not possible to get a native and proper experience of Plex on it without some hackery and a Plex Pass subscription.
The new Apple TV is slated to go on sale in late-October, with the 32GB variant coming in at $149 and the 64GB variant priced at $199.
