Tim Cook calls tax evasion claims ‘total political crap’ on ’60 Minutes’

Tim Cook on 60 Minutes

Last night it was revealed that the long-running series, 60 Minutes would be going into the “secret design studio” of Apple’s Jony Ive. But turns out the show will have even more to talk about.
60 Minutes has released a quick clip from the upcoming interview with Charlie Rose, this part focused on Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook. In the clip, which focuses on Apple’s practices of keeping a large sum of its profit overseas, Cook isn’t backing down from the long-running claim that the company does this to avoid paying fair taxes to the United States. Cook, for his part, calls this “political crap,” and points out that Apple pays more taxes in the U.S. than any other company, even while he does admit that Apple also has more money overseas than anyone else.
Cook also states that it would cost upwards of 40% to bring those funds “home,” and despite wanting to do that, it is simply not feasible to make the transition from overseas holdings back to the U.S.
Cook will also talk about encryption and terrorism, a topic that, while already heated months ago, is still a burning topic for the Cupertino-based company as it focuses on encryption for its platform. Several different groups across the board are trying to get Apple to change this policy in one way or another, including leaving “backdoors” in its software so that, when requested upon, Apple could discern the information without the owner.
Apple believes, and has repeated, that leaving a backdoor for official agencies would only leave a backdoor for criminals, too, and with that in mind has remained steadfast in its decision to use encryption
You can check out the clip below. The upcoming 60 Minutes special will air on Sunday at 7:00 PM ET and 7:30 PM PT.
