Wi-Fi calling coming to iPhone on Verizon’s network early next year

Verizon today announced that the launch of its Wi-Fi calling service. The service will launch on December 8, and will initially be available only to Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. iPhone users on Verizon’s network will be able to enjoy Wi-Fi calling on their phone only from early next year.
The feature will be enabled by a software rollout from Apple to activate the feature on the iPhone which will be rolled out early next year.
Wi-Fi Calling will initially be available on the Samsung Galaxy S 6 and Samsung Galaxy S 6 Edge and will be rolled out as a software update in phases. Additional Android and iOS devices will receive Wi-Fi Calling capabilities via future software updates expected early next year.
Sprint and T-Mobile have already been offering Wi-Fi calling on the iPhone and some other Android devices since more than a year. AT&T also enabled Wi-Fi calling in October this year soon after receiving the necessary approval from FCC. Verizon had received the necessary approval from FCC to enable Wi-Fi calling on its network in November.
Wi-Fi calling makes it possible for your phone to automatically switch to a known Wi-Fi hotspot to make calls when the mobile network is poor. All calls made over Wi-Fi to local U.S. numbers will be free for Verizon customers, but those made to foreign numbers and destinations will be billed at their usual rates.
