Last week, YouTube called out T-Mobile for downgrading its video quality for all T-Mobile subscribers. As a part of Binge On, T-Mobile is known to ‘optimise’ video quality from Netflix and other partners that are a part of its Binge On service.
However, YouTube is not a partner of T-Mobile’s Binge On and there is no reason why the carrier should downgrade its video quality.
Now, T-Mobile has issued a statement to DSL Reports clarifying the situation. The carrier says that the term “throttle” is misleading because it is not slowing down video delivery from YouTube. Instead, it is just optimising them for mobile devices that should make streaming even faster.
A better phrase is “mobile optimized” or a less flattering “downgraded” is also accurate.
Binge On is enabled by default for all T-Mobile subscribers. If you don’t want the carrier to ‘optimise’ YouTube videos for you, you can disable Binge On from Profile -> Multimedia Settings from T-Mobile’s website.
What T-Mobile is doing can definitely be termed unethical and goes against net neutrality. If Google wants, it can definitely complain against the carrier’s behaviour to FCC
