One of the major features of iOS 9 is the new Low Power Mode that extends your iPhone’s battery life by reducing performance and tweaking the background activity such as disabling automatic Mail fetch, Background App Refresh and more.
Power Saver Mode is a new jailbreak tweak that tries to imitate this feature in iOS 8 although it has a different way of extending the battery life.
When enabled, Power Saver Mode toggles on Increase Contrast and Reduce Motion options while disabling Background App Refresh and Location Services and toggling off Cellular Data if you’re connected to a WiFi network. After it is toggled on, it turns the battery icon in the Status bar from the default color to yellow indicating that Power Saving Mode has been enabled, just like iOS 9’s Low Power mode. If you connect your device to a power source, it will be automatically disabled.
After installing the tweak, to enable it, you’ll have to go to Settings -> General -> Usage -> Battery Usage. Here, you’ll find a new toggle located at the top of the pane labelled ‘Power Saving Mode’. Tap on it to enable the mode.
Power Saver Mode doesn’t essentially bring iOS 9’s Low Power Mode to iOS 8 as the latter is a more advanced battery saving feature as it also throttles CPU performance as well. However, the tweak is a good way of toggling off unnecessary battery consuming features.
Once Power Saver Mode is disabled, you’ll be returned back to the settings you had before enabling the tweak.
Power Saver Mode is not available on one of the stock Cydia repos. If you’re interested to check it out for yourself, you’ll have to add the following new repo to Cydia first: http://elijahandandrew.com/repo/. Once done, search for ‘Power Saving Mode’ and you should be able to locate and install it.
Let us know what you think about the tweak once you’ve given it a try.
Update: Power Saver Mode has received an update which now provides toggles for enabling or disable each of the features of the tweak. There are also new features such as turning off auto-brightness, disabling auto-downloads, disabling bluetooth if there’s no connection and more.
