Streaming music has become “a thing,” and even Apple has recently jumped onto the bandwagon with its own Apple Music service.
But while Apple is a huge name to jump into the music streaming pool, it may not be the last big name to do so. According to a report recently published by Music Ally, Facebookis in the works of launching its own music streaming service at some point in the future. However, while that’s being planned, the social networking giant (which just gave more control over its News Feed to users) is apparently focusing more on video, rather than simply just audio, at this point.
The report indicates that Facebook has been working with music labels in getting ad-supported music videos off the ground, either through Facebook directly or through another app — one probably put together by Facebook. That video-focused project will more than likely resemble something like Vevo, which has a prominent library of music videos of its own, but Facebook is apparently not stopping there. The social networking giant plans on launching the music video service at some point in the near future, maybe even in the next few months, and then after that an audio-only option is apparently being considered. This would put Facebook in direct competition with Apple, Spotify, Rdio, Microsoft and others in the music streaming service, but considering Facebook’s size and reach, one would imagine it’s only a matter of time at this point.
Have you tried out Apple Music yet? Would you consider a music streaming service from Facebook?
