Apple today announced a partnership with UnionPay to bring Apple Pay to China. Apple will roll out Apple Pay support to China UnionPay cardholders by early 2016 after getting the necessary approvals and certifications from Chinese regulators.
The service will work with UnionPay’s QuickPass, which is another mobile payment service offered by UnionPay. This means that Apple Pay will essentially work everywhere in China where UnionPay’s QuickPass works, and will be supported by 15 of the leading banks of the country.
“Apple Pay has revolutionized the way millions of people pay every day with their iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “China is an extremely important market for Apple and with China UnionPay and support from 15 of China’s leading banks, users will soon have a convenient, private and secure payment experience.”
Bringing Apple Pay to China has been one of the top priority’s of Apple over the last one year. Tim Cook and other Apple executives have repeatedly made it clear that the company wants to launch Apple Pay in the country as soon as possible, but due to multiple roadblocks, it took longer than expected.
Recent rumors had indicated that Apple had reached an initial agreement with UnionPay to launch Apple Pay in China in early 2016.
