Apple is aware of a website that has been circulating that causes the Mac edition of the Safari browser to crash and iOS devices to reboot. The company is working on a fix to resolve the issue.
The site, appropriately dubbed Crash Safari (crashsafari.com), overwhelms the Safari browser with a self-generating text string in the address bar. This text string not only forces devices to reboot but also leads them to heat up beforehand as the device’s processor struggles to keep up with the code request.
Those of you who try to use Google’s Chrome browser to visit the site will reportedly avoid the crash or a reboot on Windows and Android but it will severely slowdown as well as overheat Android devices as well. The issue is becoming a larger one due to many exploiting the site by disguising the link via link shorteners, etc.
On the bright side, the site appears to be one that is more of a gag/joke site as opposed to a malicious one. Furthermore, those of you who happen to click on the link and end up rebooting will be happy to know that devices that recover from a crash or reboot are said to function normally.
Apple has commented on the crash issue and has acknowledged that they are looking into a fix. In the meantime, if you feel like you might be sent one of these, try to scout the URL/source before clicking on it.
