As part of today’s quarterly conference call for the first quarter of 2016, Tim Cook announced future availability for Apple Pay at ExxonMobil gas stations.
The Apple Pay functionality is supposed to work through ExxonMobil’s Speedpass touchless payments system that is implemented in their gas stations across the United States. No timeframe was given for Apple Pay’s impending expansion with the exception that it would arrive in the coming months, a statement which is rather vague.
What this does reveal though it that iPhone and Apple Watch users will be given the ability to pay through ExxonMobil’s Speedpass app. It was also noted that Apple Pay is now available at more than five million terminals.
For those of you who didn’t know, ExxonMobil’s touchless payment system is one that is well established with over 7,000 Exxon and Mobil stations nationwide accepting payments. Typically with Speedpass, customers use a special NFC key fob to interact with the pump terminal. This key fob is connected to a supported debit or credit card that the user attaches to the account for use. Soon, Apple Pay will be a supported payment method.
