I’m sure you agree, walking while texting on your iPhone is not a safe thing to do. You might end up bumping into other objects or people. In fact, some countries have even divided walkways into texting and walking lanes. Ariki, a new jailbreak tweak aims to keep you safe while you’re texting.
The tweak automatically turns your keyboard background into a live camera feed of your iPhone so that you can see what’s in front of you while typing a message. What sets Ariki apart from other tweaks that offer a similar functionality is the convenient activation method. If you want to switch the keyboard background to the rear camera or vice versa, you can simply tap and hold on the spacebar and it does the job for you.
Apart from this, Ariki offers another functionality as well. You can tap and hold on the ‘f’ key on the keyboard to quickly turn on the torch while texting.
The tweak can also be configured via its dedicated preferences pane available in Settings. The preferences for Ariki are well laid out and straightforward, which I definitely appreciate. From there, you can enable or disable it on demand, assign an Activator gesture to turn on/off the camera view, switch between the different keyboard themes as well as adjust the transparency of the camera view.
You’ll also find toggles for enabling or disabling the camera and the torch activation keys on the keyboard.
Having the ability to quickly switch between the default keyboard background and the rear camera view is one of the best aspects of the tweak. As for the torch functionality, the tweak failed to switch it on when I held the ‘F’ key for a while although I had it enabled in preferences. This is the only issue that is present in the current version of Ariki.
If you’d like to be safe while walking and texting simultaneously, you should definitely consider checking out this tweak. Ariki is available for $1.49 on Cydia’s BigBoss repo and supports iOS 8 devices.
CamText is another jailbreak tweak that offers similar functionality but hasn’t been updated for iOS 8. If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone, then check out the apps that are available in the App Store that allow you to walk and text without running into a pole.
