There are a plenty of jailbreak tweaks available in Cydia that bring a new way of interacting with the volume HUD and make it less obtrusive. HUD Customizer is another jailbreak tweak that allows you to fully customize the volume HUD and gives you a complete freedom over how you want it to look like.
