Porsche chooses Apple CarPlay for new 911 models due to concerns with Android Auto

Porsche 911 CarPlay

Porsche has chosen to use Apple CarPlay in future 911 models, dropping plans to adopt Android Auto altogether. The German company prefers Apple’s privacy policies over Google’s, which allow the search giant to collect vehicle data.
“As part of the agreement an automaker would have to enter with Google, certain pieces of data must be collected and mailed back to Mountain View, California,” explains Motor TrendSome of that data could include things like vehicle speed, oil temperatures, and even throttle position.
As a result, Porsche chose to adopt Android Auto’s biggest rival instead, knowing Apple has no interest in collecting the same information from its own users, which could reveal its “secret sauce” at a time when Google is building its own vehicle.
“Obviously, this is “off the record,” but Porsche feels info like that is the secret sauce that makes its cars special,” Motor Trend adds. “Moreover, giving such data to a multi-billion dollar corporation that’s actively building a car, well, that ain’t good, either.”
The only information CarPlay wants to know while you’re using it is whether your vehicle is moving. This is a safety precaution adopted a long time ago by manufactures of in-car entertainment systems.
But as Apple and CEO Tim Cook have been keen to reiterate in recent weeks, the Cupertino company isn’t interested in collecting data from users and respects their right to privacy. It does not sell our information onto advertisers or marketers, or make us its product.
