With the fourth generation Apple TV, the Cupertino headquartered company is looking to convert the device into a casual gaming device for your living room as well. However, as it turns out, Apple’s vision of multiplayer gaming on the Apple TV 4 is severely limited.
According to certain developers who have already received their Apple TV 4 developer kit, the device only supports up to two Bluetooth connected controllers at once. This is in addition to the Siri remote, which is bundled with the device and can also be used as a game controller.
Well, this is a bit of a bummer. We just got word from one of the developers who were lucky enough to win the Apple TV dev kit lottery (Who we’re not naming because we don’t want to cause more Apple TV NDA drama!) who raced out and bought a ton of MFi controllers with the hopes of making a 8 player party game. These hopes were quickly dashed as they realized that the new Apple TV will only connect to two external Bluetooth devices at once, along with the included remote.
This limitation means that only up to three players can take part in a multiplayer game on the Apple TV 4 at any given moment.
This limitation, however only applies to Made for iPhone (MFi) controllers, and not to the iPhone itself. This means that developers can add support in their games for Apple TV to make use of the iPhone as a game controller, but it requires significantly more development effort from them.
It is possible that Apple can remove this restriction from the Apple TV 4 via a future update, but whether it ends up doing something like this or not, is something that only time will tell.
