Apple’s latest iOS 9.1 update, which was rolled out to the public on October 21, has been breaking Touch ID functionality on some iOS devices, according to user reports. Some have found that Touch ID has become slow, unreliable, and in some cases fails to work at all after the update is installed.
Users have been reporting the issue in Apple’s Support Communities forum, but despite the increasing number of complaints, Apple is yet to acknowledge that there is an issue. The unlucky few affected by it are reporting a number of different symptoms, including no Touch ID functionality whatsoever.
“My Touch ID has become very slow or either doesn’t work after several attempts, and I need to input my passcode,” reports one iPhone 6s owner. Another iPhone 6 owner adds, “The Touch ID was working normally before installing IOS 9.1, then after the restart and after entering low power mode, it stopped working.”
Apple is yet to answer the complaints, and has not yet responded to a request for comment from CNET. Other users and Apple support have suggested performing a full restore with a fresh install of iOS 9.1 via iTunes, but one user reports this did not solve the problem.
“I was advised by AppleCare chat to restore via iTunes as it completely replaces the software,” they write. “This was not successful and has now resulted in leaving me with the initial “connect to iTunes”.”
Some say that rebooting their device fixes the problem, but only temporarily; the symptoms reappear again a short time later.
The good news is this issue appears to be affecting only a very small number of people. The bad news is it is unclear what causes it — it appears to be happening totally at random — and there is no easy fix at this point. Users cannot even restore to earlier versions of iOS 9, because Apple has stop signing them.
If you are suffering from this issue, then, you can only wait for Apple to fix it at this point. And if you’re yet to update to iOS 9.1, maybe this will make you think twice for the time being.
