After a painfully long wait, Apple’s new iPad Pro is finally available to order from the Apple Online Store. But is it the right iPad for you, or would one of the smaller models be more ideal? To help you decide, we’ve rounded up the differences between iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 4.
While these are all the latest iPads in Apple’s lineup, they’re not exactly equals. The extra premium you pay for iPad Pro doesn’t just get you a larger display, but also the latest A9X processor, significantly more RAM, and twice as much storage as standard:
- 12.9-inch Retina display
- 2732×2048 resolution
- 264 pixels-per-inch
- Apple’s latest A9X processor
- 1.8 times faster than the A8X chip in iPad Air 2
- 2 times more graphics performance than iPad Air 2
- Latest M9 motion co-processor
- 4GB of RAM
- Twice as much as iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4
- 32GB storage as standard
- Twice as much as the entry-level iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4
- Smart Connector for Smart Keyboard
- Apple Pencil compatibility
- Four-speaker audio
- Up to 61 percent more volume
- Dimensions
- 305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9 mm
- Weight
- 723 grams (1.59 pounds)
- Price
- Starts at $799
The things not included in this list — cameras, battery life, sensors, etc. — are the same across all three models. The iPad Pro does have a larger battery, but thanks to a larger display that saps more power, it still offers the same 10 hours of web surfing in between charges.
The iPad Pro is a big improvement over its smaller siblings in almost every area, then — including size and performance. This will make it a true notebook replacement for some, especially when paired with the Smart Keyboard. But its price tag does make it expensive.
If you’re only using your iPad for browsing the web or consuming media, then, a smaller, more affordable option may be better for you.
