Tesla has snapped up microprocessor engineer Jim Keller as its new Vice President of Autopilot Hardware Engineering. Keller is the chip expert responsible for designing Apple’s A series processors, which power all of today’s iOS devices and the Apple TV.
“Jim will bring together the best internal and external hardware technologies to develop the safest, most advanced autopilot systems in the world,” reads a Tesla statement provided to Electrek. “Jim is one of the most widely respected and sought-after innovators in the industry and a very strong addition to our engineering team.”
Before joining Apple, Keller was vice president of design for P.A. Semi, and company that specialized in developing low-power mobile processors that was acquired by Apple in 2008. Keller also worked at AMD, and he returned to the company in 2012 — after leaving Apple — to become Chief Architect of Microprocessor Cores.
During his two years at Apple, Keller designed the A4 and A5 chipsets, which were Apple’s first A series processors designed specifically for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
Keller”has contributed to processing innovations that have delivered tremendous compute advances for millions of people all over the world, and we expect that his innovative spirit, low-power design expertise, creativity and drive for success will help us shape our future and fuel our growth,” Tesla added.
Keller won’t be the only former Apple employee at Tesla; others include Doug Field, former VP of Mac Engineering, and Rich Heley, former Director of Alloy Engineering.
