Apple adds full support for audio plug-ins in iOS 9 for improved audio production

GarageBand on iPad
Apple is making lots of hidden improvements to iOS 9 that didn’t get a mention during its WWDC keynote, and one of those is full-support for audio plug-ins. The change will significantly improve audio production on iOS, and allow developers to sell plug-ins that can be used in audio editing apps.
“Apple has long used Audio Units as a standard for audio plug-ins in Mac OS X for applications like its own Logic Pro and GarageBand,” explains 9to5MacNow the Cupertino company is bringing full support for those Audio Units to iOS.
Not only does this mean that developers will be able to easily convert their existing audio plug-ins for Mac to iPhone and iPad with just minor changes, but audio editing apps like GarageBand will be able to utilize additional third-party audio plug-ins.Developers will be able to sell Audio Units as apps on the App Store, and Apple’s own plug-ins— the effects and virtual instruments you find in Logic and GarageBand— will be accessible to all free of charge,” adds 9to5Mac.
Until now, editing audio on iOS has been a somewhat messy affair. It’s not too difficult if you only need one app, but if you want to apply effects in GarageBand and then add more from another app, it can get pretty tricky. That will change under iOS 9, because all of your plug-ins will be available across all of your audio editing apps.Of course, we’ll have to wait for developers to add support for them first, but those with well-supported audio apps are likely already working on those improvements.
