Apple has made some significant changes to its iPad keyboard in iOS 9 that allows it to automatically adjust for larger screen resolutions. The change strengthens rumors that the Cupertino company will launch a bigger ‘iPad Pro’ later this year.
The change was discovered by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who recently hacked an Apple Watch to run native apps. As demonstrated in the screenshots above and below, the keyboard has the ability to automatically expand and rearrange itself for a larger display.
In addition to added Tab and Caps Lock keys, there’s an entire new row dedicated to numbers and symbols (depending on which mode you’re using). There are also curly bracket keys and a vertical bar or “pipe symbol” alongside the ‘P’ key.
The new layout means there is no longer a need for a third page of symbol keys on the iPad keyboard, which will make lesser-used symbols easier to get at.
According to a tweet from Troughton-Smith, the new keyboard have the ability to scale to “much larger” displays, which almost certainly hints at the impending arrival of a 12-inch iPad Pro. It’s thought new features like Split View and Slide Over were also designed with a larger iPad in mind.Apple is expected to announce the device this fall, alongside a refreshed iPad Air and iPad mini. Recent rumors have claimed it could feature Force Touch technology, as well as a USB-C port, just like the new MacBook.
