Verizon has launched a new program that allows customers to activate iPhones that were previously supplied by rival carriers. The scheme allows iPhone owners to hold onto their existing handset when they choose to switch to Big Red.
The program, which Verizon confirmed to 9to5Mac, also covers Google’s Nexus 6 — however, there is one caveat: Before Verizon can activate either of these devices, they must be unlocked. That means if you got your iPhone on contract with another carrier, you may have to see out that contract first.
To find out if your iPhone is eligible for activation on Verizon, you can visit the carrier’snew webpage and enter a device ID — such as its ESN, IMEI, or MEID. You will then have the opportunity to active it with an existing Verizon SIM, or a new one purchased from a Verizon store.
By activating existing iPhones, Verizon makes it easier to switch for customers on rival carriers who don’t want to have to get a new device. Its move follows the elimination of handset subsidies and the introduction of new plans.
