In his recent visit to China, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook revealed in an interview with Chinese new agency Xinhua that his company is in talks with Alibaba and Chinese banks to bring Apple Pay to the country.
Cook said in the interview that he “very much want to get Apple Pay in China,” and that he is “very bullish” about the service doing well in the country.
“We very much want to get Apple Pay in China,” Cook told Xinhua during a visit to the country. “I’m very bullish on Apple Pay in China.”
Apple has been interested in bringing Apple Pay to China since last year. The company has been in talks with Alibaba to use its AliPay service to launch the service in the country and bypass any regulatory issues as well. However, a report from last month suggested that Apple’s talks with UnionPay and Chinese banks have stalled due to the dispute over the profit sharing ratio.
As for Apple overtaking Xiaomi in the Chinese smartphone market, Cook said that it is a “great news” and shows how quickly the company is gaining traction in the country.
Cook also talked about Apple’s new environmental initiatives in China that will see the company team up with local electric companies in the country to generate up to 80 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy every year. He said that Apple’s aim is to make its product in the most environmentally cleanest way possible and this starts not from the manufacturing, but right from the raw materials required for the product.
