During today’s fourth quarter 2015 earnings” target=”_blank”>fourth quarter earnings conference call, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company recorded its highest rate of Android “switchers” ever since the company began tracking the statistic three years ago. Cook used this number along with other metrics to assure investors that iPhone sales will continue to increase in the current Q1 2015 quarter.
According to Cook, 30 percent of customers who purchased an iPhone in Q4 2015 were upgrading from an Android-powered smartphone. This is the largest number of platform switchers ever recorded in a single quarter. “It’s a huge number and we’re very proud of it,” said Cook.
Apple, in recent quarters, has commented on the number of Android owners making the switch to the iPhone and iOS. A big draw for existing Android owners was the introduction of large-screened iPhone models, such as the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus, which competed favorably with comparably-sized Android models.
Apple also has marketed heavily to Android owners, introducing a dedicated website for Android switchers last year and expanding its phone trade-in program to include Android smartphones. With this trade-in plan, existing Android owners can turn in their smartphone for an Apple gift card that can be used immediately to purchase a new iPhone. With iOS 9, Apple also introduced a new “Move to iOS” app that makes it easy for Android owners to move their photos, messages, contacts and more to an iPhone and iOS.
