As part of a ‘Commit to Health’ initiative, IBM will provide free or reduced cost Apple Watch to employees

In July of last year, Apple and IBM announced a new partnership that would see the former of the pair putting a bigger focus on enterprise moving forward.
As part of that partnership, it’s been revealed by MacRumors that IBM plans on offering Apple Watches for free, or at a significantly reduced cost to its employees. This comes as part of the company’s “Commit to Health” initiative, and the Apple Watch will be distributed through the company’s health insurance policy for its employees.
Whether or not the Apple Watch is free or simply reduced in price is up to the plan that the IBM employee opts to pay for. Either the plan will cover the full price of the Watch, or the employee can opt to pay for the Watch at a reduced up-front cost. Interestingly enough, IBM used to have a similar program that used Fitbit trackers, which could see IBM employees net points over time that could be redeemed for donations towards charities or merchandise.
The health ties with the Apple Watch are obvious, as the wearable will even remind its wearer to stand up once every hour. Plus, with the Activity app tied to the Watch and iOS, the device is a nice accessory to have to keep track of certain fitness elements, like steps and more. Of course, with the partnership between Apple and IBM the inclusion of Apple’s wearable isn’t all that surprising, but it is a nice option for IBM’s employees.
