Apple News has attracted about 40 million users since its launch, said Tim Cook during Apple’s fourth quarter 2015 earnings conference call. This is the first metric announced for the service which officially debuted in September of this year.
Apple didn’t breakdown the numbers for the service like it does for Apple Music, which earlier this month had 15 million user accounts and 6.5 million paid subscribers. This 40 million figure could be the number of users who have ever opened the app to view content or it could be active users who have used the service during a certain period of time. Without this clarification, it’s difficult to determine the actual popularity of the service and compare it to competing services such as Flipboard and Zite.
Apple News debuted in iOS 9, replacing the not-so-popular Newsstand app. The News app launched initially in the US, and expanded to the UK and Australia with the release of iOS 9.1. It offers a magazine-like experience that aggregates the news from a wide variety of publishers, including The New York Times, CNN, ESPN, The Atlantic, The Daily Mail, Slate, and more.
