Apple’s Jimmy Iovine has issued an apology for comments made during a recent interview about Apple Music which were criticized as sexist. The Beats co-founder admitted in a statement, “I could have chosen my words better.”
During his interview with CBS This Morning on Thursday, Iovine tried to promote Apple Music’s human curation by suggesting “women find it very difficult at times — some women — to find music.” He continued:
“I just thought of a problem, you know, girls sitting around talking about boys, right, or complaining about boys when they’re heartbroken or whatever. They need music for that, right?“So it’s hard to find the right music. Not everyone has the right list or knows a DJ or something.”
Many criticized Iovine’s comments as sexist, while others came out to defend him — including Gayle King, co-host of CBS This Morning, who said they were “totally taken out of context” when reported by the press, and “not fair” to Iovine.
Whatever the case may be, Iovine has come out to put to an end to the reports with an official apology, which reads:
“We created Apple Music to make finding the right music easier for everyone — men and women, young and old. Our new ad focuses on women, which is why I answered the way I did, but of course the same applies equally for men. I could have chosen my words better, and I apologize.”
