Jimmy Iovine has been in the music industry for quite some time, and in that time he has apparently learned that some women find it hard to find music.
During a visit with CBS This Morning, Iovine talked about the strengths of Apple Music, touching on the idea that the company’s streaming music service is the best at what it does due to the fact it doesn’t rely on algorithms to find that next song. Iovone even went as far as to say that it’s a “human touch,” and not just “human curation,” that makes Apple Music such a strong competitor in the streaming music business.
Iovine would then go on to talk about a commercial that’s been making its way in front of eyeballs, which includes Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson, and Kerry Washington hanging out and listening to some of their favorite old songs. In his eyes, and apparently one of the reasons curation took such a front seat for Apple with its Music service, is because “some women” have difficulty finding music:
“Women find it very difficult at times — some women — to find music … and this helps make it easier.”
Iovine would actually go further and talk about a scenario that he’s seen in his head in the past, one where women are sitting around, talking about boys, and maybe even heartbroken and needing a few good jams to get through the hard times. But, back then, it wasn’t easy to find what someone in that situation would need, so, curation:
“I just thought of a problem, you know: girls are sitting around, you know, talking about boys. Or complaining about boys, you know, when they’re heartbroken or whatever. And they need music for that, right? So it’s hard to find the right music, you know. Not everybody has the right lists, or knows a DJ or something.”
There’s certainly a lot of music out there, and with a service like Apple Music, which puts tracks numbered in the millions at the fingertips of users, it can certainly get difficult to find what you’re looking for. Or simply be deluged by options. Curation can come in handy in scenarios like that.
If you use Apple Music, have you been happy with the curation therein?
