At the tail-end of 2015, Snapchat rolled out features that allowed you to buy Lenses for $0.99 to do things like puke out a rainbow. But, that’s coming to an end.
The social networking platform has confirmed, by way of a report from The Verge, that it will stop selling Lenses beginning Friday, January 8. There are some caveats, though. First, if you’ve purchased any Lenses already, they’re not going anywhere and you’ll still be able to puke out some rainbows if that’s what you’re into. On top of that, Snapchat is going to make sure that there’s a healthy rotation of free Lenses for you to use from time-to-time, including options for sponsored Lenses, too.
Snapchat says that it has sold “tens of thousands” of Lenses from users, each sold for ninety-nine cents. However, sponsored Lenses sell for up to $750,000 — so obviously it’s not a big shock that, even if Snapchat is axing Lenses for everyone else, they’re keeping the options for sponsors still available.
