Apple denies threatening to remove artists’ music from iTunes if they don’t sign up for Apple Music

Apple Music has an almost constant presence within the news cycle as of late, specifically regarding payments to labels, artists and publishers, and the company’s three month trial period.
That continues with objections being raised by artist Anton Newcombe, the frontman of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The artist took to Twitter to voice his objections to Apple’s three month trial period, and, on top of that, also tweeted that Apple had threatened to remove his music from iTunes if he did not sign up for Apple Music. Newcombe’s complaints stemmed from Apple’s lack of royalty payments to artists and labels during its extended three month trial period.
In a statement made to Rolling Stone from an Apple spokesperson, though, Apple is denying any threats made to remove music from iTunes, even if an artist doesn’t sign up for Apple Music.Recently, another major group that owns several different independent labels voiced its own concern over Apple’s decision to skip royalties for three months during the aforementioned trial period, with Beggars Group confirming that they had not worked out a deal with Apple to make its artists’ music available through the upcoming music streaming service. Interestingly enough, though, Apple is using artists for its marketing material that are part of the Beggars Group’s indie labels, including FKA Twigs, who is prominently displayed on Apple Music’s landing page. The three month trial period is certainly a point of contention for many labels, artists and publishers, and this situation seems to be an ongoing presence within the music industry. Whether it dies down on June 30, when Apple Music officially launches, remains to be seen.
