Apple seems to have silently discontinued the original iPad mini — originally unveiled in October 2012 — as the tablet is no longer available for purchase through the company’s online store.
The iPad mini was the first small iPad from Apple with a 7.9-inch screen. Despite launching the iPad mini 2 and the iPad mini 3 in the following years, Apple kept the iPad mini around, though it kept dropping its price to keep it relevant in its tablet line-up. With the launch of the iPad mini 3 and the iPad Air 2 last year, Apple dropped the price of the original iPad mini to only $249.
The original mini was the only device in Apple’s iPad lineup to ship with a 32-bit A5 chipset. By no longer selling the tablet, Apple’s iPad lineup now completely comprises of tablets that are powered by its 64-bit A7 or A8 series based chipsets. If you can live with a non-retina display, a 32-bit chipset and don’t mind the low internal storage, you will be able to easily pick up the iPad mini for anywhere between ~$150-200 from Best Buy and other retailers who still have stock of the tablet.
