Apple earns patents related to Touch-ID from biometric firm Privaris

According to a new report, Apple has been working diligently to earn the intellectual property rights from a biometric security firm known as Privaris.
The firm, which is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, has reportedly been transferring patents to Apple for quite some time. Based on information published by CNN, Privaris has transferred 26 of its 31 total patents over to Apple since December 2012, with the brunt of the transfers happening in October of 2014.
The patents themselves deal primarily with touchscreen and fingerprint technology, which could eventually make Touch ID, the security measure included with iPhone and iPads, even better in the future. As for Privaris, there are rumors that Apple acquired the company at some point in the past. However, as MacRumors points out, there is no indication that that is the case. Privaris executives have not changed their connected profiles to show new positions at Apple, and the biometric firm’s website hasn’t been updated since 2010. More than likely, Privaris went out of business and Apple is working to acquire its patent portfolio.
In February of this year, a report surfaced based on information provided by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which stated that Apple would introduce an even more advanced Touch ID sensor in the near future, and these patent acquisitions could help that happen:
Though Apple has filed patents for the integration of Touch ID and touch panel, this isn’t likely to bear fruit near term as complex algorithms and sapphire cover lens are also required,” he said. “We therefore don’t see any impact on supply chain momentum.
How often do you use Touch ID?
