Apple has a specialized SIM card for the iPad, which makes it effectively interchangeable between carriers that use SIM cards.
Unfortunately, some carriers in the United States haven’t been so accepting of the SIM card from Apple, and locked it down. However, for those that do a lot of international travel and don’t like switching SIMs, Apple’s effort is a nice attempt at alleviating that issue. Now, GigSky is jumping on the helping train by offering a series of new plans for the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, all of which are meant to help those that have to switch SIM cards often to not have to go through the struggle any longer.
“With Apple SIM in iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models, you get the convenience of choosing a cellular data plan from select carrier partners right on your iPad. And when you travel abroad, Apple SIM gives you the added flexibility to stay connected in more than 90 countries and territories around the world. So when you reach your destination and want to check your email, find directions, or send a message back home, you can purchase a cellular data plan for the duration of your trip — whether it’s a day, a week, or a month.“On Tuesday, June 30, GigSky –which touts itself as “the first global mobile network designed for travelers”– confirmed that it will offer short-term cellular data plans for the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 in over 90 countries/territories across the globe. The company says this should help travelers avoid hunting down Wi-Fi networks, a local SIM, and especially data overages. As far as where the plans will go, most of North America is covered, as is Europe, New Zealand and Europe. Africa, South America and Asia have coverage in some areas as well. For Apple’s part, the company has now provided purchase options for the Apple SIM in France, Canada, Australia, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom and still in the United States. These SIM cards can be picked up from an Apple retail store.GigSky’s pricing is available through the link below, and each of the price points are offered contract-free, so no long-term commitments to hook onto. Apple’s official page dedicated to the Apple SIM has also been updated to show where the SIM will work across the globe, which is linked below.
