A line of code buried deep within the latest iOS 9 beta appears to confirm rumors that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will feature a Force Touch display. Apple has at least been testing the technology to bring trackpad functionality to the iPhone’s virtual keyboard.
“Some force touch code in iOS,” tweeted developer Hamza Sood, the same person behind the Apple Watch face hacks. “Looks like they’ve [Apple] tested kb trackpad gestures on the 6s, activated via force touch.”
Trackpad gestures are one of the features baked into iOS 9, giving users the ability to move their typing cursor and select text by sliding two fingers across the iPhone’s virtual keyboard. But with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, it seems this gesture may be handled by Force Touch instead.
We’ve heard countless times that Apple’s next-generation iPhones will adopt Force Touch technology, following the Apple Watch and the latest MacBooks, and this code provides real evidence for that. It’s not completely definitive at this point, however.
Although the code does confirm Apple is testing Force Touch on an iPhone, it doesn’t necessarily mean the technology will make it into the next refresh. We certainly expect it to, but just don’t get your hopes up too much until it is confirmed by Apple.
