While Apple is reportedly currently in talks to develop its own original video content, Hulu is announcing its own move away from advertisements for some subscribers.
The video streaming platform has officially launched a brand new streaming tier, which the company says will be completely devoid of advertisements. Unsurprisingly, this particular streaming option is a bit more expensive than the traditional Hulu Plus subscription, which comes in at $7.99 per month. To get rid of commercials completely from your streaming content, you’ll need to fork over $11.99 per month.
There’s a catch, though. While the majority of programs will run ad-free with that particular subscription, there are exemptions from the new rule. Some shows, like New Girl, How To Get Away With Murder, Once Upon A TimeE, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy,Agents of Shield, and Grimm will be known as “exception shows,” and advertisements are still going to run on those streamed episodes:
“Hopkins says getting the various rights owners for the Hulu catalog — which includes TV shows from NBC, ABC and Fox as well as stuff from other networks, plus movies (note the Epix deal it just signed), plus stuff Hulu is creating on its own — to agree to the ad-free option took months.
As a sign of how difficult it is to line this stuff up, Hulu’s ad-free version comes with one small asterisk. Seven Hulu shows — “New Girl,” “Scandal,” “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Agents of Shield” and “Grimm” — will be what Hulu is referring to internally as “exception shows,” which means they will run with ads even on the ad-free version.“
This new subscription option works for the iOS app as well, to which there is a link to the free app below, so if you like watching shows while on the go, but hate ads, this might be something to consider.
