If the latest round of information coming out of the supply chain in Asia is to be believed, Apple is planning on switching to glass-on-glass touch panels for the iPhones due to be unveiled in 2016.
Apple switched to in-cell touch panels with the iPhone 5 as they offered a thinner design and better response time.
However, the company is struggling with different production bottlenecks due to which it is unable to increase the resolutions of the display and add “new features.” Many of Apple supply chain partners have already started supplying it with glass-on-glass touch panel samples. They are also aiming to create even thinner glass-on-glass touch panels as it would allow Apple to retain the same thickness as the current generation iPhones.
Improvement in glass-on-glass touch panels will allow Apple to create a smartphone without any bezel, since in-cell touch panels struggle with sensitivity issues on edges of displays.
G/G touch panels may also help Apple develop bezel-free smartphones as in-cell touch panels reportedly are struggling with touch sensitivity on the edges. Additionally, in-cell touch panels also make it difficult for vendors to pursue higher resolutions including Ultra HD (4K) due to current bottlenecks, the observers said.
It is almost a given that the upcoming iPhones that will be unveiled on September 9 next week will continue to use in-cell touch panels. However, if Apple has its way, the iPhone 7 might just end up coming with glass-on-glass touch panels.
