Apple patents multi-purpose iPad stand, environmental sensor tech

Apple patent for multi-purpose iPad stand
Apple has designed a multi-purpose iPad stand that could allow the device to be used in a variety of new ways throughout different environments. The Cupertino company has also invented a new environmental sensor array that could one day be integrated into devices like the iPhone.
The stand patent is titled “Magnetic stand for electronic device,” and it was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week. It describes a multi-purpose stand that would allow the iPad to be used in a whole host of new ways, and with new technologies.
The iPad is fixed to the stand using a series of powerful magnets, and multiple mounts can be attached by clips, clamps, suction cups, and threaded holes. For instance, users may be able to add music stands, tripods, car mounts, and more.
Apple even describes a hinge mechanism that can join two iPads together to create a digital book.
In a separate patent, which was filed back in 2013, Apple describes new environmental sensor technology for mobile devices that would allow them to measure things like temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, and more.

This sensor array could one day be integrated into the iPhone or iPad, allowing us to measure weather conditions without the need for third-party apps and accessories.
Apple describes how ventilation would be required to allow these sensors to operate effectively, without exposing them to the elements. It suggests placing the sensors near microphones and speakers, which are already protected using thin acoustic membranes.
Apple added a barometric pressure sensor to the iPhone last year, so it’s clear the company is serious about integrating this kind of technology into its devices. However, these are only patents, so they should not be regarded as a guarantee of things to come.
