Valve recently started sending out its Steam Link machine, along with the Steam Controller, to those who pre-ordered the set-top box and controller.
Unfortunately, as pre-orders are being fulfilled, it has become clear that the new Steam devices do not support the Mac lineup as they were originally supposed to. According to Valve, a “temporary software issue” is preventing the devices from communicating as they should. That goes for both the Steam Link, the set-top box, as well as the Steam Controller:
“Unfortunately, there are some temporary software issues that prevent the hardware from functioning with Macs. We expect these problems to be resolved as we update firmware and drivers over the next few weeks. The Steam Link currently doesn’t stream from Macs. An upcoming update will add full support for streaming audio, video, and controller input.…The Steam Controller doesn’t currently support gamepad emulation on Macs. If you opt into the Steam Beta client, keyboard/mouse emulation will be functional. We expect gamepad emulation to become functional within a few weeks. We want to apologize for the delays in providing full functionality for the Mac platform. We’re doing everything we can to resolve the issues.”
The Steam Link costs $49.99, while the Steam Controller also retails for $49.99. Valve opted to ship the Controller with the Link, as to appease those vying for a keyboard/mouse combination on the computer games they play. The Steam Link is a set-top box that connects users to the Steam Community and Library, but from their TV, by streaming the content from their computer. While both devices were supposed to support Macs out of the gate, that is not the case.
As a result, Valve is providing its Complete Pack of games, which includes the entirety of its back catalog, including Counter-Strike, Half-Life, their sequels, and several other titles, for free. The Complete Pack usually retails for $99.99. While games like Portal are included, and the focus on the pack right now is for games already released, Valve says that future titles from the company will be free, too.
