Kate Winslet and Michael Fassbender pick up Oscar nominations for roles in ‘Steve Jobs’

Kate Winslet and Michael Fassbender
Last year saw the release of Steve Jobs, which, even from its early festival runs, saw plenty of critical praise, but would eventually fall pretty flat in front of general movie audiences.
The film, which is directed by Danny Boyle (28 Days LaterSlumdog Millionaire), and written by Aaron Sorkin, earned only $73 million while in theaters — and was pulled relatively quickly out of rotation after it failed to gain any real traction out in the wild. Still, some performances in the film were lauded, including Kate Winslet’s role as Apple’s marketing boss Joanna Hoffman, and Michael Fassbender’s take on Steve Jobs himself.
As a result, the Academy has provided nominations for both actors in those roles, with Winslet picking up a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and Fassbender going up for Best Actor.
For Winslet, this is who her competition is this year:
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
  • Rooney Mara, Carol
  • Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
  • Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
  • Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
And, this is who Fassbender will be going up against come late February:
  • Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
  • Matt Damon, The Martian
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
  • Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
  • Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl
As is usual, it’s a tough year and full of great films and performances, so it will be interesting to see which actors and actresses get picked in the end. The Oscars will air on Sunday, February 28.
If you’ve seen Steve Jobs, do you think Fassbender or Winslet should earn the award? Let us know in the comments.
