The iOS version of the popular indie game, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, was rejected by Apple due to themes of violence toward children according to the game publisher.
Those looking to play The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on an iOS device are out of luck for the time being. According to the founder of Nicalis and a developer/producer of the game, Tyrone Rodriguez, Apple sent a rejection notice that said the following:
Your app contains content or features that depict violence towards, or abuse of, children, which is not allowed on the App.
Rodriguez had tweeted the rejection notice on his Twitter account, which was first noticed by the folks over at Polygon.
For those who aren’t familiar with the cult indie game, it was first released two years ago in 2014 but is a remake of The Binding of Isaac by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl from 2011. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth launched in various platforms two year ago, but never on the iOS platform. McMillen at the time noted that they were looking into the iOS version, but nothing ever came of it until the most recent incident with Apple’s rejection notice.
The indie game is a story based on the Old Testament story of Isaac, who is Abraham’s son and Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice Isaac as a test of faith. However, Abraham was stopped at the last minute by an angel of God. The story of the game definitely revolves around religion and can see why some people would not feel comfortable playing it.
Apple isn’t the only company that rejected the game, as Nintendo rejected the game for the Wii U and 3DS at first as well. At the time, Nintendo apparently said it was “questionable religious content” and therefore rejected it. However, it was ultimately resulted for approval after some time and launched on the Wii U and 3DS last year. This also isn’t the first game Apple has banned before and we’re sure it won’t be the last one either.
