Samsung may bring Galaxy Note 5 launch forward to beat new iPhones to market

Samsung Galaxy Note 4/Note Edge
With fears the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will further eat into its smartphone sales, Samsung is gearing up to launch its new Galaxy Note 5 before Apple’s devices hit the market. Sources familiar with the South Korean company’s plans say the new phablet will go on sale in mid-August.
A May report from Korean news outlet WhoWired claimed that Samsung would launch the Note 5 early in an effort to secure sales before Apple announces its next-generation iPhones, but Samsung quickly came out to dismiss those claims, and insisted it would not rush the device.
Now both Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with Samsung’s plans, say that the Note 5 will arrive in August — weeks before the IFA trade show in Berlin, where Samsung has traditionally announced new Galaxy Note devices.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were unveiled just weeks after the Galaxy Note 4 last year, and they’ve become Apple’s most successful devices to date. The company has seen an unprecedented number of people switching from Android, and Samsung — along with others — have seen sales fall.
Samsung hopes that by launching the Note 5 early this year, it can avoid a repeat of that. But timeliness may not have much of an impact, given that Apple’s next iPhones are expected to bring a whole host of big improvements.
In addition to Force Touch, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are said to include more accurate Touch ID scanners, Apple’s new A9 processor, 2GB of RAM, and much-improved cameras.
