Apple Music senior director Ian Rogers, the key lead of Beats 1, has left Apple just two months after the service made its big debut. His departure, which was first reported by The Financial Times, has this morning been confirmed by Apple.
Apple Music has received some criticism since it launched in late June, but arguably no more than any other new Apple product gets initially. What’s more, Beats 1, which was Rogers’ primary responsibility, has been greeted by plenty of praise from fans and critics alike.
In a post on his personal blog the day before Apple Music launched, Rogers wrote, “Seeing Apple Music on stage at WWDC this month… it was hard not to feel like the last 20+ years was leading to this day.”
It’s unclear why Rogers has chosen to leave Apple. He first joined the Cupertino company when it acquired Beats Music, where Rogers was CEO, for $3 billion just over a year ago.
According to The Financial Times‘ report, which suggests the departure was unexpected, Rogers will join a company in Europe that operates in an unrelated industry.
