Instagram adds support for portrait, landscape content in latest update

Instagram‘s popularity has certainly grown, even with only recently adding video and those static images being stuck in tiny boxes.
But, that’s changing in a big way with the company’s latest update for its iOS (and Android) app. With the bump up to version 7.5, Instagram is officially adding support for portrait and landscape orientation with its photos and videos. Instagram says that the square format isn’t going anywhere, as it’s part of Instagram itself at this point, but that the way images and videos are shared had to change, thanks in part to Instagram wanting to make the story that people were telling with these images front-and-center.
It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to share this type of content on Instagram: friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end.
Now, users simply have to snap the photo and hit the format icon, which will allow them to select to upload either in portrait or landscape orientation. The full-sized version of the image in its correct format will show up in your connected timeline, so your friends can see the image you always wanted to share. The user profile’s grid of photos will still show the smaller box image, just as a preview.
And, as mentioned above, Instagram is adding this portrait/landscape orientation support to videos as well. The company is altering its filters, too, no longer separating photos and videos, which should make sharing and discovering easier.
Instagram version 7.5 is available now for iOS, and a link to the app is down below.
