One of the improvements Apple has made to its Maps app in iOS 9 is the introduction oftransit directions, which help travelers find their way using buses, trains, subways, and ferries. Now the Cupertino company has revealed the sources that power that feature.
On its Maps acknowledgement page, which was updated this week ahead of iOS 9’s public debut this fall, Apple breaks down which sources provide transit information for which cities. There are 20 of them altogether, and almost all of them provide data for just one city, however, some cities use multiple sources.
For example, transit data for Berlin is provided by both VBB Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg, Alle Angaben ohne Gewähr, and Ostseeland Verkehr. Other sources include Flixbus, Metrolinx, MiWay, 511.org, and ITOWorld Ltd.
Initially, transit directions will be support in ten major cities, including Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, London, Mexico City, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, and Washington DC. Apple will, of course, be adding more to that list after iOS 9 rolls out.
Apple has also added another two sources — Positron Technologies and DAC Group — to its business listings section for Maps. Previously, the company relied on just one provider — Yext — so users can now expect to see a greater quantity and more reliable business information inside the app.
