In 2014, Apple officially announced the Apple Watch, the company’s first smart wearable. It wouldn’t be until April of 2015 that the device would become available, though.
While there were rumblings throughout 2015 that Apple would announce a new Apple Watch, a second-generation device, at the company’s media event in September, that did not pan out. Instead, Apple released watchOS 2, which brought plenty of new features and additions to the wearable, giving it an extra boost of functionality and life while Apple worked on the next iteration of the device.
A yearly refresh of the Watch is expected, just like with the majority of Apple’s other major products, so rumors are beginning to pick up steam as to when the company might launch the next Watch to the world.
Previous rumors had suggested that the Apple Watch 2 would boast the same display size, even as Apple aimed to get a slightly bigger battery shoved inside the frame. Apple hasn’t always shied away from slimming down its devices while sacrificing battery life, but rumors suggest that Apple won’t be taking that path with the Watch. At least, not yet.
Now, according to a research memo released by Cowen and Company, the analysts believe that Apple is planning on releasing the second-generation Apple Watch in mid-2016. While the first wearable was released in April, this would mean that Apple is aiming for May, June, or even a July release in 2016 for the Apple Watch 2. Considering that Apple has already used its September media event to talk about new Watch straps and watchOS 2, it wouldn’t seem likely that the Cupertino-based company would have another event just to announce the Watch 2, which makes a later release in 2016 certainly possible.
The report was put together after Cowen and Company toured suppliers for the Watch, but no other information was provided.
