Since Apple Watch made its public debut back in April, Apple has sold almost 7 million units, according to the latest estimate from research firm Canalys. The device’s popularity meant Apple was the only smartwatch maker to ship more than 300,000 units during Q3 2015.
Pebble saw its smartwatch shipments increase during the same period, thanks to the release of Pebble Time — but the company still shipped just 200,000 units in total. Samsung’s shipments declined as customers awaited the release of the Gear S2 in Q4, Canalys says.
“Vendors will continue to battle for position behind Apple in Q4 as a raft of new devices from a diverse set of companies hits the market,” reads the report. “For example, both Fossil and Tag Heuer will be launching their first smart watches before the end of the year.”
Canalys expects “all eyes will be on Apple Watch sales during the Q4 holiday quarter,” which will be considered an indication of the strength of the smartwatch industry as a whole. It’s worth noting, however, that shipments don’t mean sales; some of the units Apple has shipped could still be sat in retail channels.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to get a real indication of Apple Watch’s success without hard numbers from Apple. The company has been reluctant to provide us with those since Watch made its debut, though CEO Tim Cook has said a number of times that Apple is happy with the way it is selling.
Either way, it’s clear Apple Watch is vastly more successful than rival smartwatches.
When it comes to basic fitness trackers, however, Fitbit and Xiaomi still lead the pack. Xiaomi’s Mi Band surpassed 10 million cumulative shipments during Q3, Canalys says, while Fitbit announced a huge revenue increase this week, and said Apple Watch was having no impact on its business.
