Wikipedia founder wants Apple to stop selling iPhones in the UK if end-to-end encryption is banned by the government

iPhone 6 in China

Apple has recently been subjected to a lot of fire in the United States for its stance on the privacy of its users. Government agencies like DOJ and FBI have been egging Apple to allow them access data of iPhone owners, but the company absolutely refuses to compromise on the privacy of its customers.
In the United Kingdom, things are no different with the government planning on passing a bill that will ban end-to-end encryption. The Investigatory Powers Bill would basically mandate it for all tech related companies to hand over their data to any government agency when requested by them. Apple uses end-to-end encryption for its services like FaceTime and iMessage, and thus would be unable to comply with such requests from government agency.
Coming out against this “stupid” law proposed by the UK government, Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, says that he “would like to see Apple refuse to sell iPhone” in the country if the government ends up passing this bill.
In the event that this bill is passed by the UK government, though it is unlikely since it will affect various banking services in the country as well, it will be interesting to see what Apple does. The company will never disable end-to-end encryption and compromise on the privacy of its customers, so the only other option it will have left is to stop selling iPhones in the UK.
