Google today announced that Project Fi now supports data-only devices like the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. Project Fi is a wireless network service from Google in association with the leading networks in the United States, which includes T-Mobile and Sprint.
Project Fi is still in a closed ‘beta’ invite-only stage and works with only on the newer Nexus smartphones from Google. If you already are using Project Fi and have subscribed to one of its voice plans, you can add a data-only device to it at no additional cost. This is unlike what other carriers offer where you usually end up paying anywhere between $10-$25 to get add your tablet to the mix.
For now, Project Fi data-only SIM cards are only compatible with the following tablets:
- Nexus 7 – K009 (US LTE)
- Nexus 9 – 0P82300 (US LTE)
- iPad Air 2 – Model A1567
- iPad mini 4 – Model A1550
- Galaxy Tab S – Model SM-T807V
Other data only devices might just work, but they have to be unlocked and should be compatible with T-Mobile network. This means that you can even use a Project Fi SIM card in your iPhone or previous generations iPads, though on the iPhone you will not get access to text or voice calling features.
Google currently limits a Project Fi members to have a maximum of 9 data-only devices in their account.
While Google’s support page does not list the iPad Pro, it is likely that the device will work just fine with a Project Fi SIM card.
