Leaked Mercedes-Benz memo outlines Apple CarPlay plans

Mercedes-Benz CarPlay
Mercedes-Benz has had plans to bring Apple’s in-car system, CarPlay, to its vehicles for quite some time now, and a newly-leaked memo is finally shedding some light on what that means for owners.
The memo, which was initially published by C450 AMG, was an internal document shared to Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the United States, and outlines which vehicles will be getting official support for CarPlay in the future. Specifically, cars with manufacturing dates beginning December 1, 2015, or manufacturing dates of January 8, 2016 or later.
CarPlay will be accessible with the iPhone plugged into a specific USB port that’s installed in the head unit in some Mercedes-Benz vehicles. It will be controllable through an available touchpad, or a central controller. The voice command button located on the steering wheel can be pressed to bring up Siri controls. In the internal memo, MB outlines that while CarPlay is officially supported, it is indeed an entirely different system from the stock infotainment system.
That means Mercedes-Benz owners will not be able to control Spotify through CarPlay, and use stock systems, like COMAND Navigation, at the same time.
The 2016-year models that support a standalone package to upgrade to CarPlay support, which costs $350, include the CLA, GLA and the B-Class lineup, with a production date of December 1, 2015 or later.
CarPlay will come standard with the aforementioned COMAND Navigation system in the following vehicles: 2016 CLS550 Coupe and the CLS63 S Coupe, both with production dates of December 1, 2015 or later. The 2016 GLE400, the GLE450 Coupe, GLE63, and GLE63 S models also support CarPlay standard with COMAND Navigation, with a manufacturing date of January 8, 2016 or later.
