HSBC and First Direct have today rolled out Apple Pay support in the U.K., two weeks after the service made its debut in Great Britain. Customers can add their cards to the Passbook app on their iPhone now to take advantage of wireless payments in more than 250,000 retail stores.
The addition of HSBC and First Direct takes the total number of participating banks to nine. Others include American Express, MBNA, Nationwide, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander, and Ulster Bank.
Banks that will add support “soon,” according to Apple’s website, including Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, and TSB.
Apple Pay can be used in stores with an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and with an Apple Watch connected to an iPhone 5 and up. Most retailers currently have a £20 transaction cap, but some — including the Apple store — allow customers to spend as much as they like with Apple Pay.
HSBC was supposed to be an Apple Pay launch partner in the U.K., but customers found they were unable to add their cards when the service made its debut on July 14. HSBC then announced that Apple Pay would be supported by the end of July, and it has stuck to that promise.
