Right now, Straight Outta Compton is garnering high praise from critics and viewers. It’s a movie that, in part, shows the rise to fame that artist Dr. Dre and others took part in decades ago.
However, while the film is seeing plenty of high talk for its writing, direction and acting, there are some that raised concerns, and more than concerns, over the omission within the film of allegations that Dr. Dre abused women 25 years ago. As a result of those allegations, and the meteoric rise of Straight Outta Compton, both Apple and Dr. Dre have provided statements to The New York Times, which ran a piece recently outlining the allegations, the film, and Dre himself.
For his part, Dr. Dre says that he’s no longer the person he was 25 years ago. That, back then, he was drinking too much and had “no real structure” in his life. While he also says that none of those things are an excuse for what he has done in the past, he says that he’s a different man now, also noting that he’s been married for 19 years:
“Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again. I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.“
An Apple spokesperson also provided a statement for the article, echoing Dre’s apologies for the mistakes that he’s made in the past, but also states that he is no longer that person. That, for the year and a half that Dre has worked at Apple, the company has every reason to believe that he has changed:
“Dre has apologized for the mistakes he’s made in the past and he’s said that he’s not the same person that he was 25 years ago. We believe his sincerity and after working with him for a year and a half, we have every reason to believe that he has changed.“
Dr. Dre recently launched “Compton: A Soundtrack,” his final produced album, which also serves as the soundtrack to the aforementioned film. It launched as an Apple Musicexclusive, and Apple has said that the album has been streamed 25 million times since its debut.
