The Apple Watch is an advanced device all by itself, but the strength of the wearable comes in its connectedness to the iPhone.
There was some confusion running rampant in the Major League Baseball organization concerning the Apple Watch, and whether or not, as it’s a connected device, if it’s okay to have it on the wrist while players, managers and other staff members are in the dugout. Right now, there’s a ban on connected devices while in the dugout, so that means no tablets or smartphones, and apparently the Apple Watch got wrapped up in the ban, too, earlier in the week.
It all started with Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost, who was seen wearing the Apple Watch while in the dugout at a recent game. The funny part is the MLB actually gave Yost the Watch in the first place, so to retroactively ban the thing seemed strange.
So, MarketWatch did a little digging, and found out that the Watch is, in fact, perfectly okay to use in the dugout because it can’t do much without the iPhone, and, as mentioned above, the iPhone (and all phones) are banned from dugouts. So, the Apple Watch is fine:
“After concerns were raised during the game about whether Yost wearing an Apple Watch in the dugout gave his team an unfair advantage over its less-connected adversaries, Major League Baseball told MarketWatch it is not banning smartwatches during games.“
Looks like the Apple Watch is safe for now, but one can only imagine that the MLB will look at Apple’s wearable again in the future.
